PLEASE LIST BELOW SOFTWARE PACKAGES/FEATURES THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE INSTALLED ON THE NEW RELEASE OF RED HAT
- the possibility to use older versions of MATLAB
- SVN configured for everyone (Before the new system is installed, we should be alerted, so that we can make a dump file of all the repositories).
- The ability to plug an USB storage device in the vision clients and have it mount
- The most recent version of MySQL for best Wiki performance (compatibly with other requirements of the Sys Admins)
- Enabled Audio/Mics on clients which are also desktops (vision110, 112, 113, altadena etc...[people, fill in if you have an audio card and would like to use it])
- I'd like for us to be able to upgrade Firefox independently (I run my own copy). If administered centrally, then I'd like for it to be updated systematically and have all the Java and Flash stuff, with appropriate plugins. It should run embedded videos. Right now, even having my own copy won't do it and I have to recourse to Windows. It might just be that linux/firefox isn't yet ready for the same experience, or perhaps I have not managed to configure it properly due to the conflicting copies of packages at system and local level.
- the latest mplayer/ffmpeg stuff - this relates to the previous point as I think they are being used by Firefox.
- Thunderbird : same as firefox, I have used the latest, with integration of Google calendar via "lightning" and "provider for google calendar"
- Kile : very nice editor for latex under KDE. It's programmable and it allows to interact with SVN for automatic versioning. I have some script I'm happy to share
- Eclipse : very much customizable editor to write code in Python and C/C++. I wish we had the latest as I couldn't get it to run without random crashes on my own installation.
- Java : Should have the appropriate version for Eclipse and the two should be upgraded simultaneously.
- VideoIO : Gives ability to read diverse video formats into Matlab. I would *really* like to see videoIO installed on these machines. Ow, I'm sticking to windows :-(
- gqview
- wordnet
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
- GIMP Image editor
- Inkscape Vector Illustrator
- Latest version of LyX LaTeX Editor
- Latest version of Open Office
- Latest version of Xfig
- FreeNX remote login server/viewer
- Opera browser
- JabRef BibTex manager
- Latest version of OpenGL libraries
- FLTK v. 1.1
- Latest version of Skype
- Latest version of RealPlayer
- *WINE* ( This seems to be now supported on RH 5 ). It allows us to run a copy of Windows (for which we have free licenses anyways) on our linux machines. This would be excellent as we can remote login to them, like it's a dual OS! There is no need to have isolated Win machine any longer (except maybe a couple for Piotr) which could end up making us "under-utilize" the $1,000 purchase-price for large amount of time since they aren't "dual OS".
